Wintergreen Police Department- Safety Tips

Our Wintergreen community is a safe place to live, work, visit, and enjoy. One of the ways we keep the community safe is through partnerships with our homeowners. The WPD offers, at no cost, a house watch program. When you are away, we can periodically check your home and keep an eye out. Speaking of which, in today’s connected society the purchase of a security camera is an investment and a deterrent. WiFi cameras are cheap, easy to install, and can be remotely viewed by the homeowner.

Installing an alarm system can provide peace of mind. These around the clock monitored systems detect and notify law enforcement of possible break-ins. In addition, some systems offer fire and medical alerts, smoke and carbon monoxide detection, freeze warnings, and water pipe ruptures. A monitored alarm system can provide reassurance that your most valued investment is secure and safe.  Many of these systems can be ordered online, are easy to install, and may also reduce your home insurance premium.

Other steps you can take to deter crime include leaving random lights on, setting timers for porch lights to cycle on and off, playing music, or installing a remote viewing doorbell. Consider changing your door locks. If you have resided at your home for any long period of time someone else may have a key (former contractor, house cleaner, etc.).

Finally, it is important to also keep a watchful eye out on your neighbor’s home and report anything suspicious. We rely on you to let us know when something looks amiss. When we look out for each other we keep Wintergreen a safe place to live. The Wintergreen Police Department is always on-duty and ready to assist you. Our non-emergency number is 434.325.1106. In an emergency please dial 911.
