The Plunge is an excellent introduction to the beauty and natural history of the area. he hikers will find a steep climb around rock formations that were created millions of years ago.
The north end of the Chestnut Spring trail leaves the stream and yellow birches and rhododendron of the Shamokin Gorge and enters oak-hickory forest type. As the trail enters south facing territory, several small streams cross the trail.
The trail begins at the Devils Knob Overlook and connects to the White Oak trail and the Pond Hollow trail. Bird watching and views of Pond Hollow and Fortunes Ridge are the treats of this rocky-footed hike.
The Highland Leisure trail provides hikers with quick access to older-growth forests without taking them on a long hike, although in places it can be as steep and rocky as any of the moderate mountain trails.
The Loggers Alley Trail is located on an old logging road. The upper trail (red) continues to the lower trail (yellow) to the Shamokin Gorge just below the falls.
Lower Shamokin Falls trail is the longest destination trail on the property, the end of the trail is located at the base of a cascading waterfall that begins just below the Upper Shamokin Falls Trail.
At the end of this valley, the Pauls Creek trail near Crawford’s Knob is a series of cascading waterfalls. The rock surfaces of the falls have been smoothed by thousands of years of rushing water.
The White Oak trail is excellent for finding wildflowers during warmer months. White Oak Trail also provides hikers with a short, heavily forested hike through Wintergreen’s wilderness.
